In 1987, the head of the KGB of the country I was in...ask me this question...
"Are you ready to die today?"
Now, that's a question that will get your attention.
How would you answer that question? Are you ready to die today?
A writer in my industry ask a young fellow the following:
"What are you going to do when you graduate from college?"
"I guess I will get a job."
"Then I will get married"
"We will have children."
"I will save and retire."
"We'll travel and see the world."
"I guess I'll die."
How would you answer "then what?"
Where will you be spending eternity because eternity is a very long time?
Spending eternity with God in heaven, believe it or not is a free gift! It is not something you have to earn. It is not something you buy. It is not something you work for. Eternal life with God is free and given to you as a gift.
You might ask "why"?
Here's why...you and I are people who go our own way and do our own thing(s). We don't necessarily follow God's plan. We like to follow our own plan. God's plan is for each of us to say good things and not bad. God's plan is for us to think good thoughts and not bad. God's plan is for us to live a good life and not a bad life.
The truth is that each of us blows it in some way or another. God, as we know, is perfect.
HE tells us in the Bible that we can get to heaven based on the way we live our life. All we have to do is live a perfect life, a life without a single error and without a single mistake. A life, where in our entire existence we never ever have a bad thought or utter a bad statement.
Can you do that? If so, you can enter heaven based on your life.
The fact for you and the fact for me is we have not and cannot live a perfect life. At some point in our existence we mess up. We say things we shouldn't. We do things we shouldn't. We think things we shouldn't.
So can you and I spend eternity with God in heaven based on our life? No, we cannot.
God calls the "bad" in our life sin. The word sin means, "to miss the mark". Sin is an archery term. When archers shoot their arrow if it hits the bulls eye it is a perfect shot and someone shouts "bulls eye". However when the arrow misses the bull’s eye then someone shouts "sin" which means the arrow missed the mark of perfection.
You and I miss the mark of perfection by the wrong or bad in our lives.
However, there is good news for you and for me.
That good news tells us that God is great, full of love and mercy. God is also great in that HE is a just God. God loves us but HE must punish sin.
The good news is that God sent HIS Son, Jesus Christ, to earth as a baby. He was born through a virgin made pregnant by God HIMSELF. Jesus grew and is the only person who lived a perfect life. Jesus never sinned. HE never missed the mark of perfection.
The good news is that God sent HIS Son Jesus to die the death that you and I deserve because God must punish sin as HE is totally just. To demonstrate HIS justice HE punished and killed HIS Son Jesus on the cross. Jesus who is 100% God and who was on earth 100% man, died in place of you (and HE died in my place too).
You might be familiar with this Bible verse found in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that HE gave HIS only Son, that whosoever believes in HIM shall not perish but have eternal life."
God gave HIS Son to die a death on a cross, to be punished in place of you and I.
When we believe that we are sinners, those who sin, those who miss the mark of perfection, and when we also acknowledge and believe that Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, God Himself and the only perfect man died for us on that cross and paid the full and complete price for the sin in my life, then we receive the free gift of eternal life.
When we believe and trust that through Jesus Christ alone I have eternal life with God and receive this free gift of heaven, all our sins are forgiven and we become God's property, once and for all eternity.
God purchased a place in heaven for each of us with the payment of the body and blood of His Son, Jesus.
By faith or trust (belief) in Jesus Christ alone we exchange our worthless sinful self for the perfect life of righteousness of Jesus Christ. This exchange, my sin for HIS righteousness is the great exchange. Christ got what He did not deserve and I received what I do not deserve.
Eternal life or heaven is given to me as a free gift because there is only ONE capable who could pay for it and that ONE is Jesus Christ.
Will you believe in Jesus? Will you rest on Christ alone for eternal life and heaven with God forever? All you need to do is acknowledge to God that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself.
Admit you need the Savior of sinners, Jesus Christ, to save you. Tell HIM now and HE will!
1st John chapter 5 says, "He who has the Son has life, eternal life with God, and he who does not have the Son of God, does not have this life."
Jesus died for you so you may live, forever. Now that, is not just Good News, it is Great News!
